Based in Octavia Hill Birthplace House 7-8 South Brink Wisbech PE13 1JQ
Come and spend a day in historic Wisbech. Parking is free and all the visitor attractions are within easy walking distance – and no hills!
Famed for its Georgian architecture, Wisbech is surprisingly a port, with seagoing vessels making the 10-mile journey from the Wash to dock here.
You could begin by visiting Peckover House (National Trust) on the North Brink and then cross the river to the Octavia Hill Birthplace Museum on the South Brink – Octavia Hill being one of the founders of the NT. Having visited those properties, you can walk past the imposing memorial to Thomas Clarkson, the slave trade abolitionist, into the Georgian Circus passing left or right of the War Memorial. This will take you to the Wisbech and Fenland Museum and the Castle – no longer a fortification but now a regency villa. Beyond that lies the church of St Peter and St Paul dating from the 12th century, unusual in having two naves under a single roof.
Within a 10-15 minute walk of the town centre are two further attractions. Further down the North Brink is Elgood’s Brewery with its gardens including a maze and along North End beyond Asda is the atmospheric Wisbech General Cemetery which has ten Commonwealth War Graves.
